Model Overview

The Toyota Veloz is an entry-level compact 7-seater MPV developed by Toyota for emerging markets across Southeast Asia, slotting in below the Innova. Co-developed by Toyota and Daihatsu, the model shares its platform and production lines with the Toyota Avanza and Perodua Alza. In Southeast Asian markets, the Veloz serves as a practical, high-value people-mover, championing affordability, generous cabin space, and multi-purpose versatility. As of June 2026, the Veloz is officially on sale across multiple markets including Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, with overseas starting prices equivalent to roughly RM80,000 to RM100,000. In late 2025, Toyota unveiled the 2026 Veloz Hybrid in Indonesia, marking a pivotal step towards the nameplate's electrification.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the Veloz breaks away from traditional MPV proportions by heavily incorporating SUV-inspired design cues. Up front, it features a large polygonal grille with a blacked-out mesh insert, flanked by sharp LED headlamps and a prominent Toyota emblem, delivering a rugged front fascia reminiscent of the RAV4. In profile, a sharp character line spans the length of the vehicle, while blacked-out B- and C-pillars create a floating-roof aesthetic. Round the back, full-width taillights are paired with a high-mounted roof spoiler and a silver faux skid plate for added visual depth. Toyota also introduced the Veloz X-Urban crossover variant, which adds matte-silver underbody garnishes, protective wheel arch mouldings, and aero side skirts, while raising ride height by 15mm to achieve a 205mm ground clearance for an enhanced rugged appeal. Inside, the Veloz sports a clean, functional T-shaped dashboard layout featuring a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and a floating central touchscreen, focusing firmly on practicality.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the bonnet, the Veloz is offered with both petrol and hybrid powertrain options. The petrol variant is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated inline-four engine with Dual VVT-i, developing around 105–106 PS and 138 Nm of torque. In selected regional markets, a 1.3-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine is also available, generating approximately 96.5 PS. Transmission choices for the petrol model include a 5-speed manual or a CVT with a 7-speed sequential mode. The Veloz Hybrid is equipped with the 4th-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS II), pairing a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with a front-mounted electric motor for a combined system output of around 111 PS, mated to an E-CVT. On the fuel economy front, the petrol model returns around 6.0 litres per 100 km, while the hybrid variant is rated at an impressive 4.8 L/100km. The fuel tank capacity is 43 litres.

Chassis & Handling

The Veloz rides on a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout. Its suspension setup comprises MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear. The chassis has been tuned to deliver a stable, composed ride even when fully laden or travelling over uneven surfaces. Steering duties are handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. In terms of ground clearance, standard variants offer around 195mm, while the X-Urban edition increases this to 205mm via a suspension lift. Selected variants also come with three selectable drive modes: Normal, Eco, and Power.

Cabin & Features

The Veloz features a versatile 2+3+2 seven-seater cabin layout. The front and second-row seats are generously cushioned for commendable comfort, with second-row occupants also benefiting from a ceiling-mounted rear entertainment screen. While constrained by its compact footprint, the third row remains practical for daily short-distance journeys. Dimensionally, it measures 4,475 × 1,750 × 1,700mm in length, width, and height, with a 2,750mm wheelbase. In terms of kit, mid-to-high-spec variants come equipped with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch floating infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Convenience features include automatic climate control, a Qi wireless charging pad, USB charging ports for front and rear rows, smart keyless entry, and push-start ignition. An Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold is also standard.

Safety & Driver Assistance

In terms of safety, the Veloz offers up to 6 airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and rear parking sensors depending on the market and trim level. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) come standard across the range. Higher variants benefit from the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) advanced driver assistance suite, which includes Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with steering assist, Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). The 2026 Veloz Hybrid further updates the TSS package by incorporating Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

Market Performance & Reception

The Veloz has delivered strong sales performance across Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, the Veloz HEV topped the hybrid vehicle sales charts in March 2026 with 2,325 units delivered. In Vietnam, the Veloz Cross ranked as Toyota's second best-selling model in April 2026 with 1,503 units sold, retaining second place within the brand in May 2026 with 797 units. In Malaysia, the Veloz is locally assembled alongside the Perodua Alza at the same plant in Pahang. In China, the Veloz has not been officially introduced due to the absence of local production plans. Within its segment, the Veloz competes primarily with its sibling Avanza as well as prominent Southeast Asian MPVs like the Mitsubishi Xpander and Suzuki Ertiga. Backed by competitive pricing, flexible cabin practicality, and Toyota's hallmark reliability, the Veloz has firmly carved out a solid position in the region's entry-level MPV market.
